What is a website A-Z index?
Nancy Mulvany, "Indexing Books", 2005
A website index is an A-Z list of topics and themes from your website and is constructed exactly as an index at the back of a book. The index is written in HTML and appears as a web page within your website. It will typically include:
- synonyms - will your website visitor be looking for "price", "cost" or "fee"?
- terms and their acronyms - will they want to search for "Anti-Social Behaviour Order" or ASBO?
- inverted phrases - will they be looking for "sales records" or "recording sales"
Instead of page numbers in the index, entries are hyperlinked, so by clicking on the entry the user is taken straight to the right place in your website.
