Why have a website index?
Nancy Mulvany, "Indexing Books", 2005
With most businesses and organisations now having websites, your website needs to be easy to use and encourage visitors. Without a website A-Z index you are frustrating users and hiding information!
But we have a search facility... What's wrong with the search facility? Well the user has to second guess the terms you've used on your website … and spell them without any typos. If they get it wrong and don't find any results they will move onto the next website.
Or say the user has managed to guess and spell the right term and the search result presents them with a list of 14 web page locations. Which of the links only leads to a passing mention, or an irrelevant reference? How do they choose between them? Or do they just give up searching and move onto the next website?
Do you have a site map? Or navigation menu along your web pages? Most books have contents pages listing chapter titles – without an index the user still has to guess where the information they need is hidden.
If information "doesn't exist" on your website, your customer will move onto the next site.
